The first vacuum cleaner model was invented in 1860, by
Daniel Hess, of West Union, Iowa and bore the name "sweeper". That
machinery had a rotary brush and a mechanism of hoses, which would generate the
absorption of dust and dirt.
In 1868, Ives W. McGaffey invented and patented in Chicago
the first vacuum cleaner to use the vacuum principles he named "whirlwind".
This model was lighter and more compact, but more difficult to handle, because
it had a crank that had to be turned while the vacuum cleaner was pushed on to
the floor.
In 1876, Melville R. Bissell of Grand Rapids, Michigan
created for his wife, Anna Sutherland Bissell, a model of electric vacuum
cleaner that cleaned carpet sawdust.
On November 14, 1898, John S. Thruman of St. Louis, Missouri
filed the papers to obtain the patent for a pneumatic vacuum cleaner, which he
called the "pneumatic carpet renovator". The patent was accepted on
October 3, 1899.
About English Hubert Cecil Booth is said to be the one who
invented the first motorized vacuum cleaner, in 1901. Booth created a large
device, which in the first phase worked with an oil motor, and later with an
electric motor, which he called "Puffing Billy". The principle of the
first vacuum cleaner created by Booth was based on the suction of air through a
pump and a cloth filter. If you have an older vacuum, don't throw it away, many of them can be refurbished by a knowledgeable Arvada vacuum repair shop, that will keep it working for many years to come.
